Scottish Cross Country - Runaway Success!

Congratulations to our P6 and P7 pupils who took part in the Scottish Schools Athletics Association Primary Cross Country Championships at Kirkcaldy High School on Saturday 20th April.

1300 pupils from 167 schools across the country took part and we are delighted that our pupils competed so successfully.

P6 Girls 6th place
P6 Boys 4th place
P7 Girls 4th place
P7 Boys 11th place

Thank you to all the families who accompanied and supported, particularly Callum's mum and Lucia's dad for being lead adults on the day.

Lucia came third in her race and fourth overall in the very close P6 Girls race with a time of 6.48 (1st 6.41, 2nd 6.45, 3rd 6.47.) Bea also ran extremely well, placed 13th with a time of 7.08.

Tom was 18th and Callum 19th in their race, contributing very well to the overall 4th place of the P6 Boys team.

Elena came joint 4th in her race with a time of 6.40 (1st place 6.17, 2nd place 6.24, 3rd place 6.34) helping the P7 Girls secure fourth place.

With only three members in their team, instead of five, the P7 Boys still managed a fantastic combined team score to achieve 11th place.

Superb results!  Full Results here

FINA World Diving Competition at RCP

On Friday 19th April P7 pupils Esther, Eve and Kirsty were able to take advantage of Diving Coach Jenny Lemming's generous and kind offer of a few free tickets to the FINA World Diving competitions being held at the Royal Commonwealth Pool over the weekend. Not only did they have the opportunity to see world class divers, they were also given some lovely freebies including towels and caps.

The FINA/Midea World Series is an annual, invitation-only event where the world's diving elite go head-to-head six times in the space of three months.

The 2013 Series is the seventh running of the event and takes place over six legs in Beijing (15-17 March), Dubai (March 21-23), Edinburgh (April 19-21), Moscow (April 26-28), Guadalajara (May 17-19) and Mexico City (May 24-26).
The diving programme at the World Series mimics that of the Olympic Games, featuring 3m Springboard, 10m Platform, 3m Synchro and 10m Synchro for both men and women.

Kirsty came back to school for her Gymnastics club sporting her 'Commonwealth Clyde' mascot sticker and gave the event a resounding thumbs up. Good luck at the Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Kirsty! A very busy, sporting weekend!

Thank you to Mrs Beth Walker, our wonderful PE Specialist, for organising the entire event for all city primary schools and arranging so many celebrity Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth swimmers to demonstrate their skills. ComputerXplorers After School Clubs

In both clubs pupils will be creating their very own robots from Lego and then programming them to react...chirping birds, snapping crocodiles and drumming monkeys!

ECO - Plant for the Planet

On Wednesday 10th April, Eco Teachers Alison Mackintosh, Sandra Gregson and Iain Kearton with nine Eco Pupil reps from P5-P7 and pupils from P5B welcomed 4 Eco pupil reps from Tollcross, James Gillespie's, Preston Street and Bruntsfield Primary schools to a Plant for the Planet event at Sciennes. Sebastian Hemmann and his team of three assistants (Sjoerd, Theodora and Dagmar) led a day of activities for the children, designed to raise awareness of climate change, which culminated in the planting of cherry, rowan and birch saplings in our Wildlife Garden, opposite the playground.

Each participant was issued with a t-shirt, book and certificate. The project began five years ago and was initiated by a child called Felix. It has since grown into a global movement, supported by major world figures and organisations, with the aim of planting a billion trees in each country that gets involved. Children are empowered as ambassadors for change and tasked with spreading the message on how to combat climate change by taking practical steps. The initiative is supported by City of Edinburgh Council and has been endorsed by the Lord Provost. The first event in Edinburgh was held at Davidson's Mains Primary in March 2012, the second at Duddingston Primaryand the third at Sciennes Primary. The intention is that schools who send 3-5 pupil participants will in turn offer to host their own event so that the initiative expands throughout the city.

The saplings we used were generously provided for free by the Woodland Trust as part of their initiative to plant 6 million trees for the Queen's Jubilee. Trees can be planted between November and April.

Many thanks to the P4P Team and to the schools who released staff and pupils to be involved.

Please note that there are still places available for the very successful afterschool club "Earth Calling" run by Angus Egan and Sebastien on Thursdays. Contact school for more information.
